A few things worth deciding on before installation day, not after.
Drop-in and undermount sinks have different fit and support requirements. Check the proposed fixture and countertop compatibility against the manufacturer information. Mounting support, surface condition and plumbing access should be addressed in the installation plan, with any separate countertop or cabinetry responsibility made clear.
Stainless steel is the most common and budget-friendly. Cast iron and fireclay resist scratches and hold up longer but weigh significantly more — worth flagging if you're on an upper floor without elevator access. Composite granite splits the difference on durability and price.
Double basins help with separating wash and rinse, but eat into usable counter space — a real constraint in most NYC kitchens. Single large basins are increasingly common in renovations for exactly that reason.
Some co-op boards require licensed-plumber documentation for fixture changes, and rentals may restrict permanent modifications. Sink installation begins with more than choosing a basin that looks suitable. The countertop opening, mounting method, cabinet space and existing supply and waste connections affect the plan. If you have already purchased the sink, keep the model, included fittings and manufacturer information ready. A replacement that uses the same opening can have a different scope from a new vanity or a change in basin configuration. Tell us about countertop work, faucet changes and appliance connections being planned by other providers. The proposal should make those responsibilities clear rather than assume every fitting, support item and surface alteration is included with the basin.
Drop-in, undermount, pedestal and wall-mounted arrangements need different support and access. The fixture's installation requirements and the existing surface condition matter as well as the visible seal. A damaged cabinet or mounting area can need separate work before the plumbing installation is completed. Discuss any countertop or cabinetry responsibility with the appropriate provider and identify who approves it if the property is managed.
Arrange a clear route to the room and an accessible cabinet or fixture area. For an apartment, confirm building work hours and any delivery or elevator requirements. If a valve, waste connection or concealed section cannot be accessed as expected, further work should be explained before the scope expands. Send management's current contractor package, insurance instructions and work-hour restrictions before a planned appointment. Identify who approves the fixture installation and any changes to common piping.
